The latter tends to be producing more results due to the fact that when the iron surface is hot, the substances go away easily.
When it comes to cleaning steam irons, cleaning the steam system is also important. For this, you can use a vinegar solution (one unit of vinegar and three units of water) in the water dispenser. Now take some spare cloths and start ironing them while bursting steam frequently. This method will be useful when cleaning steam irons.
